I’m reading through Colossians this week. Feel free to join me! As I was reading this morning I remembered this post I wrote last fall. Thought it might be worth sharing again.
6 My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you’ve been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. 7 You’re deeply rooted in him. You’re well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. 8 Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double- talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. (MSG)
Some time ago I heard someone say, “Most Christians are educated beyond their obedience.”. Something about this phrase rang true for me. Throughout my life I have struggled at times to act upon what God has laid on my heart. I’m an information hound. I like to read and study things deeply, but sometimes my need to have all the information first has kept me from acting in obedience. What I have cone to realize over the last few years, however, is that obedience is not something that necessarily flows out of having all the information. Obedience flows out of our identity. It’s less about knowing exactly the right thing to do and more about knowing who you are and acting accordingly. Information is a good thing, but it is not everything. I think this is why this text speaks to me so loudly, and I love how the Message version puts it so straight forward. This morning it was like God saying to me, “You’ve got enough information to do as I’m asking you to do…”
“Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving”
What is God asking you to do? Is there an area of your life where you long to obey but struggle to act? What might it be like to remember who you are (a child of the King) and act. School’s out. Let’s start living.
