Whom will you serve?

“…choose today whom you will serve…but as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

This is the verse we have chosen to focus on as this new year begins.  Every morning we sit as a family at the breakfast table and read a story from our Children’s Bible, review our virtue of the week and discuss our family scripture verse.  Although we change up our verses every couple of weeks, we have decided to make this specific verse our family verse for the year.  It is what we do and who we are.  We are children of God.  We love Him, worship Him, find hope and strength and forgiveness and joy in Him, as we choose to follow and serve our Lord.  It defines all we do, for we believe as God loves us, we are called to love others, as God has sacrificed for us, we are to sacrifice for others.  We are a family on mission, mission to serve God and serve others.

It will not be an easy road.  Just in the past month, darkness is everywhere I turn.  So much loss, sickness and heartache.  We are so in need of light to refresh us and revive us.  Jesus spoke that this life would bring trouble.  We do not walk blindly, but we also do not walk defeated.  For in darkness, the Light of the World shines brightly, and He uses us simple, non-perfect people to shine His light in this dark world, if we will let Him. He will not force us.  He invites and it is up to us to stand up, step out of our comfort zones and live out the unimaginable as He leads and walks with us.  With His invitation comes challenge.  It will mean letting go of many things, specifically those things that I hold on to; things I want to and are waiting to happen the way I want them to or expect them to happen… basically, my focus on self-preservation and protecting my family from the darkness of the world.  There is a lot of fear, anxiety and pride that I need to lay down.  It will be a day by day process, but one I am committed to.  It is the only way to live life to the full, with hope and true joy.  And it is a life I want for my kids.

So as we walk into this new year, we walk boldly as a family on mission for we have chosen to walk in the light and be a part of dispelling the darkness.  It means surrendering everything and believing that God’s got it all.  It means putting on the full armor of God and standing in the front line of battle as the arrows of attack stream our way.  We are ready.  We have chosen. We will serve the Lord.

A favorite quote of mine from a favorite JRR Tolkien story, “… All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”  What will you choose to do this New Year? Whom will you choose to serve?  May The Light of the World shine brightly in your life and may you experience Jesus in deep, moving ways.

Here we go…
