Born

*An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:9-14 TNIV)*

As a preacher, I always wrestle a bit with what to say on Christmas Eve. I always wonder if there is something special or challenging or clever that I should try to communicate… but every year I land in the same place… That this story… this amazing and wonderful true tall tale says enough… and that my job is much like that of the angels that spoke to the shepherds that night so long ago. To simply, and boldly proclaim “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger… Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” Because that’s just it, isn’t it? The events of that first Christmas so long ago is the point in this great story where whatever distance had come between God and his people was forever erased. This is the point in the story where God made it possible for our story and God’s story to forever be entwined. The God of the universe… the God who simply spoke and all of creation came into being loves us enough to include you and me in the greatest story ever told.

I don’t know all that you carry as you hear this old story. I don’t know if you carry great joy or great sorrow… doubt or faith… comfort or pain. I don’t fully know what is at the forefront of your story today. But I do know that wherever you are or whatever you carry, there is good news. Christ our Savior is born and that same Jesus longs to be the main character in the story of you life. Christ our savior is born… he came into the world and has overcome sin and death and the grave and that same Jesus longs to be the main character in the story of your life… that you might overcome the same.

“Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger… Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”

Jesus Christ is born! Let’s join him and be part of the greatest story ever told.
