This week I want to continue working our way through these marks of discipleship by looking into the fourth practice: SERVE both at and beyond St. Martin. Disciples are committed to SERVING God by SERVING others.
A common theme in much of my teaching and preaching tends to be identity – naming and claiming who we are in Christ as children of God. I talk about it a lot, because being assured of our identity (as well as our neighbor’s) really holds the key to opening up so much of what it means to follow Jesus, including how and why we SERVE others. God has chosen to include us in his family, and has gone to immeasureable lengths to do so. What good news that is for us and for all people! It also means, however, that when we look at the people around us, no matter what their race or background or experience, we learn to see other children of God… other members of our same family. I don’t know about you, but I was raised to believe that family takees care of family. So when we see our brothers and sisters in need, no matter how great or small, we try to meet them in their place of need in the ways that we can out of the abundance God has given us. We SERVE, not because of some kind of expectation of return, we SERVE because it is an expression of who we are in Christ. It is how live together as family.
Who might God be calling you to SERVE?
