These verses to me serve as a powerful reminder of our call to serve as Jesus’ witnesses in the world where we live. This guy that Jesus set free could have become a great spectacle in some kind of traveling road show. In our day someone would be ghostwriting a book for him and he would be on the motivational speaker circuit. “Come See the Formerly Demon-Possessed Man!” They could have sold a lot of tickets, I’m sure. But Jesus did something much different, didn’t he? He sent him back to where he had been to e a witness in his own home. Maybe Jesus understood that the impact of his transformation would be much more significant with those who he lived with… who loved him… who had longed for, but maybe lost hope that he would ever be set free. Maybe the same is true for us. Our greatest opportunity for impact often begins with those closest to us.
